How we put this together: We read Surfer's and each alternative's official pricing and feature pages on 8 October 2026, using a full browser where prices only load with scripts, and compared entry prices, usage limits, seats and AI-search tracking. We haven't run paid subscriptions of these tools for this article. Prices are in USD as shown on that date.

Surfer SEO is a content editor: you enter a keyword, it scores your draft against the pages that rank, and it now tracks mentions in AI search too. The reasons people look elsewhere are mostly structural. These come from Surfer’s own pricing page, read on 8 October 2026:

  • Documents are the meter. Discovery ($49/month, billed yearly) allows 120 documents and one seat. Standard and Pro allow 360. Only Peace of Mind ($299/month) is unlimited, and that’s under a fair-usage policy.
  • Features sit on higher tiers. Internal linking, content ideas, custom voices and the cannibalization report start at Pro ($182/month). The API and a dedicated success manager start at $299.
  • AI tracking is split up. Discovery tracks no AI prompts. Standard tracks 25 prompts a week (the comparison table lists ChatGPT). Daily tracking across five AI engines starts with the $82 AI Search Analytics plan, which lists no document allowance.
  • Yearly billing only on the page. Prices are shown as billed yearly, and Surfer’s FAQ says you pay for the full year upfront. It doesn’t show a monthly price.
  • New owner. Surfer joined Group Positive, a European marketing-software group. Surfer says the team and product direction stay the same.

Every tool below counts something different (articles, analyses, drafts, reports), so compare what you’d produce in a month, not the sticker price.

The alternatives

1. Frase: the closest like-for-like swap

Frase is also a research-and-editor tool with SEO and GEO scores, and its entry plan includes AI tracking. Starter is $39/month billed yearly ($49 monthly) for one seat and one site, with 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month. It tracks 50 prompts on ChatGPT and Google AI. Professional is $103/month annual ($129 monthly) for three seats, five sites and 40 articles. There’s a free 7-day trial.

Starter holds at its monthly limits rather than billing overages, and extra seats on higher plans are $29/month each. Frase now pitches an agent that can publish on its own; you can leave that off. We compare it further in our Frase alternatives guide.

2. NeuronWriter: the cheapest entry point

Bronze is $23/month ($19 on yearly billing). It gives you two projects, 25 content analyses, 15,000 AI credits and five AI-monitored questions. Gold ($69 monthly, $57 yearly) adds the one-click Content Designer, Google Search Console, WordPress and Shopify integrations, API access and team sharing with 75 analyses. NeuronWriter lists a 7-day free trial on Gold terms and a 30-day refund on your first plan.

The limitation is Bronze: content sharing is read-only, there are no integrations, and 25 analyses won’t stretch far for a publishing team.

3. Page Optimizer Pro: unlimited reports for freelancers

Basic is $40/month with 20 credits and unlimited domains. The Unlimited plan is $72/month, or $62 billed annually ($739 a year): unlimited domains, unlimited POP reports under fair use, and 50 credits for the AI Writer, E-E-A-T, NLP and Watchdog tools. Teams is $143 monthly ($119 annual). An AI Visibility Tracker covering ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity is listed on every plan. There’s a 7-day refund guarantee.

The catch is credits: on Basic, reports and extras all draw from the same 20-credit pool.

4. Semrush Content Toolkit: briefs from Semrush data

At $60/month you get the Topic Finder, an SEO Brief Generator, AI and SEO content optimization, brand-voice content and five SEO content boosts a month. Extra users are $20/month each. If you already use Semrush for keywords, planning and writing in one place is simple.

The toolkit page doesn’t mention AI-search tracking. Semrush sells that separately: its SEO and AI Search plans started at $199/month ($165.17 on annual billing) on the SEO pricing page.

5. Clearscope: unlimited users, no contract

Essentials is $129/month with no contract: 20 drafts, 50 pages, 20 topic explorations and 50 tracked queries across ChatGPT and Gemini. Users and projects are unlimited. Business is $399/month with 300 queries, 300 pages, 50 explorations and a dedicated account manager. Clearscope offers a 14-day free trial.

It’s the premium pick. Drafts are capped at 20 a month on both plans, and extra drafts and pages are sold as add-ons.

6. SE Ranking Content Marketing: editor inside an SEO suite

SE Ranking’s Core plan is $129/month, or $103.20 billed annually. It includes 25 content articles a month through its content editor and AI writer, plus rank tracking for 2,000 keywords and 100 AI prompts tracked daily across five LLMs. There’s a 14-day free trial.

The content tool is one module among many. Extra articles are an add-on (from $39.20), and Core includes one manager seat.

7. Scalenut: GEO-first articles and clusters

Scalenut’s monthly Starter plan is $59 with a 7-day free trial. It covers one domain, five GEO (AI-search) articles, five optimizations of existing articles, five keyword clusters and 10 prompts tracked weekly on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. The annual toggle showed a limited-offer $24/month with doubled limits, so check the live page.

Prompt tracking refreshes weekly, not daily, and the monthly article counts are small.

8. Dashword: briefs first

Startup is $99/month for 30 content reports, five seats, content briefs, an AI writer (100,000 words) and free, unlimited scoring. API and MCP access are on every plan. Business starts at $349/month for 100 reports and 10 seats, with bulk report creation and SSO. The first report is free, and Dashword offers 20% off annual billing.

Reports are the unit that runs out. Dashword’s pricing page doesn’t list AI-search tracking.

9. Rankability: built for agencies

Starter is $97/month billed monthly ($970 a year). It includes 20 content projects a month (a new page or a refresh, with brief, outline and draft), 100 tracked AI queries across 11 AI platforms, unlimited client workspaces and team members, and API and MCP access. Agency is $297 for 80 projects.

If you’re a single in-house team you’re paying for client features. The pricing page lists no free trial.

10. MarketMuse: site-wide topic strategy

MarketMuse has a free plan (one user, 10 queries a month). Paid tiers (Optimize, Research, Strategy) are “book a demo”: 100, 1,000 or 10,000 tracked topics, and 5, 10 or 20 content briefs a month. MarketMuse says it uses patented topic modeling and a content inventory instead of keyword-by-keyword checks. Siteimprove agreed to acquire it in 2024, per MarketMuse’s own page.

No public paid prices, so it’s hard to budget without a sales call.

How to choose

  1. Count your monthly output in each tool’s unit. Surfer’s 120 documents, Frase’s 10 articles, NeuronWriter’s 25 analyses, Clearscope’s 20 drafts and Dashword’s 30 reports aren’t the same thing. Page Optimizer Pro’s Unlimited plan removes the cap.
  2. Decide if AI-search tracking must live in the same tool. Frase, NeuronWriter, Page Optimizer Pro, Clearscope, SE Ranking, Scalenut and Rankability list it at entry level. For dedicated trackers, see our best AI visibility tools.
  3. Check seats and add-ons. Clearscope has unlimited users. Frase and Semrush charge $29 and $20 a month for extra seats or users.
  4. Check the billing basis. Surfer’s page shows yearly prices only. Clearscope, Rankability and Scalenut show monthly prices. Frase, NeuronWriter and SE Ranking show both.
  5. Use the trials. Frase, NeuronWriter, Scalenut and Semrush list 7-day trials, and Clearscope and SE Ranking list 14 days. Run one real article through two tools before you commit to a year.
