How we put this together: We read Frase's and each alternative's official pricing and feature pages on 8 October 2026, using a full browser where prices only load with scripts, and compared how each handles content briefs, research and AI-search tracking on its entry plan. We haven't run paid subscriptions of these tools for this article. Prices are in USD as shown on that date.

Frase now describes itself as a “content operating system for AI search”. It researches, drafts, publishes to your CMS, watches pages for ranking decay and tracks AI answers. That’s more than some buyers want, and the plan limits shape the bill. From Frase’s pricing page, read on 8 October 2026:

  • Starter is small. One seat, one site, 10 articles, 50 audit pages and 25 AI generations a month. It stops at those limits rather than billing extra.
  • AI engine coverage depends on the plan. Starter’s AI Visibility covers ChatGPT and Google AI (50 prompts). Perplexity arrives on Professional (200 prompts, $129 monthly). Claude and Gemini only come with Scale (500 prompts, $299 monthly).
  • Seats cost extra. Professional includes three seats and Scale five. Additional seats are $29/month each.
  • The trial is 7 days. It runs at Professional’s feature set with capped quantities.

People moving off Frase usually want one of two things: sharper research and briefs, or stronger AI-search tracking. Each pick below is judged on both.

The alternatives

1. Clearscope: research plus AI query data

Clearscope’s pricing page lists “query fan-out awareness” on every plan, meaning the web searches an AI platform runs to build its answer, which you can then write for. It also tracks queries across ChatGPT and Gemini. Essentials is $129/month, with no contract and a 14-day trial: 20 topic explorations, 20 drafts, 50 pages and 50 tracked queries, with unlimited users.

That’s about two and a half times Frase Starter’s monthly price, and drafts are capped at 20 a month.

2. Surfer: an editor with a separate AI tracker

Surfer sells AI tracking as its own plan. AI Search Analytics is $82/month billed yearly: 50 prompts refreshed daily across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini, plus mention-gap and sentiment views. Content plans start at Discovery ($49, 120 documents, no tracking), then Standard ($99) and Pro ($182), which adds content ideas, coverage gaps and a cannibalization report.

Prices are shown billed yearly only. For more options at this price point, see our Surfer SEO alternatives.

3. Dashword: briefs first, agent-ready

Dashword is organized around three jobs: content briefs, optimization and monitoring. Startup is $99/month for 30 content reports and five seats, with free, unlimited scoring. The API and MCP server are on every plan, so Claude, Cursor or your own code can build a brief and score a draft. Business starts at $349/month for 100 reports.

Dashword’s pricing page doesn’t list AI-search tracking, so pair it with a tracker if you need one.

4. MarketMuse: research depth across the whole site

MarketMuse works from a site inventory and topic model rather than one keyword at a time, and it says its approach is patented. Paid tiers include 5, 10 or 20 content briefs and 1, 3 or 5 strategy documents a month. The top tier offers nine brief types, including comparison, listicle and product review. A free plan (10 queries a month, no briefs) exists.

Paid pricing is “book a demo”, and its pricing page doesn’t mention AI-search tracking. Siteimprove agreed to acquire it in 2024, per MarketMuse’s own page.

5. NeuronWriter: cheap research plus monitored questions

Bronze is $23/month ($19 yearly) with 25 content analyses, a content plan and five AI-monitored questions. NeuronWriter lists Google, AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity as the models it monitors. Diamond ($117 monthly, $97 yearly) raises that to 20 questions and 150 analyses, and an add-on buys more questions and models. There’s a 7-day trial.

Five questions is a thin sample, so expect to upgrade if tracking matters.

6. Semrush Content Toolkit: briefs from keyword data

At $60/month the toolkit includes a Topic Finder with weekly, country-specific ideas, an SEO Brief Generator and content in your brand voice. It’s an easy fit if your keyword research already lives in Semrush.

AI tracking is a separate purchase. Semrush’s SEO and AI Search plans started at $199/month ($165.17 billed annually) and include 50 prompts tracked daily. Together with the $60 toolkit, that’s well above Frase Professional’s $129/month.

7. Page Optimizer Pro: a tracker on every plan

Every POP plan includes the POP Content Brief, an AI Writer and an AI Visibility Tracker covering ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Frase reserves Claude and Gemini for its $239 plan. Basic is $40/month, Unlimited is $72 ($62 annual, with unlimited reports under fair use), and Teams is $143.

Credits fund the extras, and Basic has only 20 a month. There’s a 7-day refund guarantee.

8. Scalenut: AI-search content and audits

Scalenut’s monthly Starter plan is $59 with a 7-day free trial: five GEO (AI-search) articles, five optimizations, five keyword clusters and 10 prompts tracked weekly. Plus ($89) raises that to 25 prompts, 30 articles and a 200-page monthly content audit. Professional ($199) adds Perplexity and 100 prompts.

Tracking refreshes weekly, not daily. The annual toggle showed a limited-offer $24/month with doubled limits.

9. Rankability: research-to-draft for client work

Each content project covers research, a brief, an outline, an AI-assisted draft and export. Starter is $97/month (billed monthly; $970 a year) for 20 projects, 100 tracked AI queries across 11 AI platforms, unlimited client workspaces and team members, and API and MCP access.

It’s priced and designed for agencies, and the pricing page lists no free trial.

How to choose

  1. Decide which job is primary. For briefs and research, start with Dashword, MarketMuse or the Semrush toolkit. For AI-search tracking, start with Clearscope, Surfer’s $82 plan or Page Optimizer Pro.
  2. Compare engine coverage with Frase’s tiers. Frase’s Starter covers two engines. If you need Claude or Gemini data without paying for Scale, Page Optimizer Pro and Rankability list them at entry level.
  3. Check refresh rates. Frase says it monitors daily. Scalenut and Surfer’s Standard plan refresh weekly. For dedicated trackers, see our best AI visibility tools.
  4. See what happens at the limit. Frase’s Starter just stops. Its Professional plan offers optional overage pricing ($5 per extra article, $0.50 per audit page, $0.25 per AI prompt). Clearscope and Page Optimizer Pro sell add-ons, and Dashword and MarketMuse cap reports and briefs by plan.
  5. Plan briefs from clusters if you start with a keyword list. Grouping keywords first means each brief targets a page worth writing. See our best keyword clustering tools.
